Superheroes In Therapy

Final Semester of University (Spring 2014), project for Drama 202. We were broken into groups to work on original, short plays.

Somehow this ended with me playing Batman and Green Arrow in a therapy session.

Promo Video for Focus Youth Conference: BIG (2014)

I’ve recently produced a promotional video for Mount Carmel’s annual youth Conference, Focus. I provided all video kit for this, as well as running one of two cameras (Panasonic GH2s running Driftwood’s Cluster X Series 3 Driftwood T9 patch), and performing all editing and grading (grading was done using the ColorGHear Toolkit in After Effects). The song in the video is “We’ll Call It Home” by Yes Nice from their album Warm Gun. The entire thing was shot, edited, and graded in a 12 hour period at locations around Edmonton, Alberta.

Open Source Animation 1: The Adventure Begins

Recently I’ve been running into a few issues with animating Adobe Flash. The first was a canvas size restriction – The best it can do (that CS5.5 can do, at least) is ~2.8K, rather than say 4K. Obviously this isn’t a huge issue now, but in the future it may become a problem. The second was in how its rendering system works (or, rather doesn’t). When exporting a QuickTime file, Flash effectively just runs an instance of Flash Player off-screen then captures frames from it. However, this can be a huge issue if you have very large scale or very complex animation in your work – if it lags in Flash Player, your export is also an unusable laggy mess. I found a bit of a workaround for this bug (the gist is that you set your framerate to 1fps when you export, then speed the animation back up in your NLE). Obviously this isn’t optimal, as it further complicates the render process. You can export PNG sequences just fine, but those miss any actionscript-based or nested animation in your file, which can seriously limit how you can animate your work.

How do we get from that to Open Source Software? Well, there’s a couple other things going on here. Read More »

A police detective has to investigate his own murder, after becoming the latest victim of the serial killer he was hunting down. Episode 3 features some unexpected help in the investigation.

Behind The Scenes: Resurrection

As you may have seen from other blogs here, my current project is an animated series called Resurrection. This post is a sort of behind-the-scenes look at how each episode is constructed, with a mostly Adobe workflow. All of these screenshots come from the creation of Episode 2 of the series.
